The Walk for Hunger

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Volunteers are needed to cheer walkers on and provide them with refreshments at Magazine Beach in Cambridge, mile 16.5 of the walk. This checkpoint is critical to the walkers' morale as it is close to the finish line and many of the walkers are feeling the effects of having walked so far. Sign up for a shift, and join us in encouraging and cheering them on. Children ages 12 and older and their parents are welcome to help. Lunch will be provided for volunteers. Available shift times are: 10am to 2pm, 11am to 3pm, or 2pm to 5pm.

Please let me Margaret Woo (M.Woo@neu.edu) know if you are interested.

Mass Incarceration and American Ideals, Lecture and Discussion with Professor Loury

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Professor Loury will argue that we Americans should recognize a kind of social responsibility for the massive expansion of the incarceration complex in American life over the past two generations. Society at large is implicated in the wrongful acts freely chosen by individual persons, because we have acquiesced in-perhaps actively supported, through our taxes and votes, words and deeds-arrangements which shape his consciousness and sense of identity in such a way that the choices he makes, which we may condemn, are nevertheless an entirely understandable response to circumstance.

Professor Loury is a distinguished academic economist who has contributed to a variety of areas in applied microeconomic theory: welfare economics, game theory, industrial organization, natural resource economics, and the economics of income distribution. In addition to this scholarly work, Professor Loury is also a prominent social critic and public intellectual. His over 200 essays and reviews on racial inequality and social policy have appeared in dozens of influential journals of public affairs in the U.S. and abroad. Professor Lourys books include One by One, From the Inside Out: Essays and Reviews on Race and Responsibility in America; The Anatomy of Racial Inequality; and, Ethnicity, Social Mobility and Public Policy: Comparing the US and the UK.

This talk is based on his article which appeared last summer in the Boston Review, and which can be found here: http://bostonreview.net/BR32.4/article_loury.php

Political Campaigns and the 2008 Election

Saturday, January 26, 2008

Jennifer Lawless graduated from Union College with a B.A. in political science. She went on to receive an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford. A nationally recognized expert on women's involvement in politics, she is co-author (with Richard L. Fox) of the book, It Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don't Run for Office. She has also published articles in various political science journals and has issued a policy report on the barriers that oftentimes preclude Americans from running for office. Following is a link to her recent, provocative op-ed in the Providence Journal.

Providence Journal 12/23/2007

A womans place

We have a viable female presidential candidate and a woman as Speaker of the House of Representatives, but thats not enough, says Jennifer Lawless, assistant professor of political science. Americans are still looking at womens style over substance when it comes to politics, she says in an Op-Ed.
