Young Alumni Committee

YA Mission

The Brown Club of Boston Young Alumni Committee strives to provide an open forum for Brown young alumni to increase the number of interactions amongst ourselves, support our collective activities and endeavors, and raise the level of Brown awareness in the Boston area.

What We Do

You can count on us, the Young Alumni (YA) Committee to plan about an event a month for you and other young alumni Boston area.  The greater Club events are a great way to meet people and do some networking, but it's also fun to have a forum where just the recently graduated folks can kick back and have a good time.  We pride ourselves in making sure that you get enough networking, beer, skiing, wine-tasting, comedy, trivia, charity events and volunteering in to keep you happy and coming back for more.  Most of our events specifically target Brownies, but we do participate in the Ivy-Plus and other all-school young alumni events in the area, so becoming a member of our club gives you a nice big network to help you reminisce about the good old days ("Are we still friends?") and meet some new kids too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time commitment required for Committee members?

The committee meets once a month for approximately 1-2 hours. In addition to attending meetings, each committee member is encouraged to attend a few of the group’s events and plan at least 1 event annually. Over the course of the year, the time commitment is approximately 5 hours per month.

What types of events does the Committee plan?

We host a range of events to attract a diverse array of local young alumni and our friends. Over the course of the year, we host bar socials (happy hours and trivia nights), community service engagements, outdoor activities (ski trips, rafting trips, hiking/kayaking), and multi-school/Ivy-Plus events, among other things.  We are always looking for ideas on new activities to plan, so definitely incorporate your thoughts into your application, and always feel free to share your thoughts by emailing youngalumni@brownclubofboston.com

What am I going to get out joining the Committee?

10-15% of each Brown class comes to Boston directly following graduation, and each year, we fight New York for the #1 or #2 title of being the biggest Brown Club in the world. As a member of this team, you can bolster your own network in the long term with access to one of the most robust Brown alumni groups in the world (at all levels – peers, older alumni, and even folks at the Alumni Relations office) while having fun with the Committee and making goals/ planning fun events for which you can see immediate results. Finally, YA Committee members can apply to join the larger Brown Club of Boston Board of Directors to serve as a YA Liaison on the Board.

Do I get free membership if I'm on the YA Committee?

Sorry, no!  Actually, you are required to be a member of the BCoB to be eligible for membership on the Committee.  So, make sure your membership is up to date: http://www.brownclubofboston.com/memsub.html

How many members are you looking for?

Our annual target is to have 3 members from each alumni class year for the last five graduating classes, for a total of 15 members on the Committee.  Each year, we have folks in each class year move out of the area because of grad school and new jobs, so there is generally at least 1 opening for each class year, in addition to the full set of open positions for the most recently graduated class.  This year, we are looking for members from the graduating classes of ’06-‘10.

What positions are on the YA Committee?

The Committee has four officers: a Senior Chair, Junior Chair and two Secretaries; all positions are elected annually. The Senior Chair leads the group for a term of one year and also holds a position on the Brown Club of Boston Board of Directors. Additionally, all members of the YA Committee who also sit on the Brown Club of Boston Board of Directors are considered Young Alumni Liaison for the Committee on the Board.
